![]() In this example, drive letter C is assigned to the system partition. Get the system drive letter and assign a disk letter to the EFI partition. Here is how to restore an UEFI GPT bootloader on a computer (learn more in the article on how to repair EFI Bootloader on Windows 10). ![]() Restore the bootloader on BIOS MBR device.Ĭheck the disk letter assigned to the new large partition on the drive:Ĭopy the BCD bootloader files on the drive C:Ĭhange the MBR record and update boot entries in the BCD configuration file: If you try to boot from the new disk without fixing the boot records, the Operation system not found error will appear.īoot your computer in Windows installation environment again and open the command prompt ( Shift+F10). ![]() If you see UEFI, you have got a modern computer, and Windows is installed in the UEFI mode. If you see Legacy in the BIOS mode value, your computer is using BIOS (or UEFI works in the Legacy/CSM mode). The procedure of migrating Windows to another drive depends on your computer’s firmware: BIOS or UEFI. The most often, a question like this arises when migrating to SSDs, which are usually smaller than classic HDDs. Otherwise, you will have to delete/move some files from the source drive. You can clone a hard drive to a new smaller drive if Windows occupies less space on the current drive than your new drive is in size. If you want to copy an installed Windows to a disk for another computer, you will have to get new drivers for disk controllers, chipset and videocard to boot the OS on a new hardware. Swapped the new clone into the old boot position and BANG!.she booted up very nice, Win 11 Home screen waiting for input in 26 seconds.I also doubled the RAM from 4GB to 8 while I was under the hood.īottom line? Nothing hurt, just lost some time (a valuable commodity at 75) but on a good note I learned something.just because the first 10 you do don't have encryption enabled doesn't mean the 11th one won't either.Note that you will be able to clone an operation system by copying it to a new disk only if you migrate it on the same computer (or two computers with similar hardware). Then I cloned the drive again and this time it only took 20 minutes. It took almost an hour for it to decrypt (un-encrypt?) the drive. I put the old drive back where it was, booted up the laptop, went to "Settings" => "Privacy and Security" => "Device Encryption" and at the top is "Device Encryption".slid the toggle to the left to "Off". Anyway, I cloned the drive and when I swapped the new, cloned drive into the boot position and powered it up it asked for a USB key with the code on it, which of course I didn't have! Then it hit me. ![]() I did not realize that "Device Encryption" was enabled when I cloned the drive because none of the previous ones I did had it enabled.my bad for NOT checking. Windows 10 Home does not support BitLocker, but you can still use device encryption as long as your laptop or PC meets the hardware requirements. Device encryption is available on all editions of Windows 10, but BitLocker encryption is available only on Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise or Education versions. This was a Windows 10 laptop that had been updated by its owner to Windows 11, the Home version. I have cloned existing HDD's and some too-small SSD's in Windows 10 laptops and PC's to new, larger SSD's maybe 10 or 12 times in the past 2 years using Macrium Reflect 8 with no issues.until I ran into this just in the last 2 days. ![]()
